10Base-5 uses a separate <strong>network</strong> controller and MAU, which connects<br />

through an AUI interface cable, and which can be no longer than 50 meters.<br />

MAUs connected <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> backbone cable segments must be spaced at least<br />

2.5 meters apart. The MAU attaches <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> cable through a cable tap<br />

(vampire tap) interface. Alternatively, multiport MAUs can be used which<br />

electronically simulate <strong>the</strong> and signaling functions of <strong>the</strong> backbone cable.<br />

Multiport MAUs are governed by <strong>the</strong> same segment density rules as<br />

traditional MAUs (no more than 100 stations per segment).<br />

• 10Base-2—10Base-2 uses thin (0.2 inch) 50-ohm coaxial cable as a<br />

transmission medium and supports data transmission at 10Mbps. 10Base-2<br />

can support up <strong>to</strong> 30 end-stations per cable segment. The same 5-4-3 rule<br />

applies <strong>to</strong> 10Base-2. Each cable segment is limited in length <strong>to</strong> 185m, with a<br />

maximum backbone cable length of 925m. 10Base-2 stations connect <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>
