X.25 <strong>network</strong> standard is also an ISO creation. X.25 is used <strong>to</strong> connect ATM<br />

machines, credit card validation systems, and some of <strong>the</strong> older <strong>network</strong>s run<br />

TCP/IP over it. X.25 has an error checking and correcting version. Frame Relay and<br />

X.25 are commonly used WAN pro<strong>to</strong>cols. All Cisco Systems products are GOSIP<br />

compliant.<br />

There are several Network Communication Pro<strong>to</strong>col (NCP) suites available <strong>to</strong><br />

interconnect computers <strong>to</strong>day. For example, DECnet was developed <strong>to</strong> connect end<br />

stations and Digital VAX systems. IBM has Systems Network Architecture (SNA) for<br />

mainframe and mini-communication. Apple Computer uses AppleTalk <strong>to</strong> provide<br />

print and file access. Novell's NetWare <strong>network</strong> operating system uses <strong>the</strong> IPX/SPX<br />

pro<strong>to</strong>col suite based on Xerox's open standard XNS system.<br />

Of course, <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> "mo<strong>the</strong>r" of all pro<strong>to</strong>col suites: TCP/IP. Transmission Control<br />

Pro<strong>to</strong>cols, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, (before OSI) were largely considered separate from<br />

<strong>the</strong> complete data communication process. Data transport was seen as different
