Transmission pro<strong>to</strong>cols are responsible for two important activities required when<br />

<strong>network</strong> data communication is achieved. Access control relates <strong>to</strong> how <strong>the</strong><br />

transport medium is accessed as transmission signals are sent across <strong>the</strong> medium.<br />

Data framing dictates how <strong>the</strong> signals are formatted and sent between nodes. Node<br />

addressing is also <strong>the</strong> responsibility of <strong>the</strong> transmission pro<strong>to</strong>cols. LAN transmission<br />

pro<strong>to</strong>cols and WAN transmission pro<strong>to</strong>cols each deal differently with issues of<br />

access control <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> transport medium.<br />

WAN Transmission Pro<strong>to</strong>cols<br />

A WAN is a collection of LANs connected by some permanent or semi-permanent<br />

point-<strong>to</strong>-point connection. These point-<strong>to</strong>-point <strong>network</strong> links use transport<br />

pro<strong>to</strong>cols that employ asynchronous or synchronous communication <strong>to</strong> transmit<br />

data. In ei<strong>the</strong>r case, <strong>the</strong> link bandwidth is dedicated <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> connection, whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is data <strong>to</strong> transmit or not.
