SNMP Agents for UNIX A number of SNMP agent implementations for UNIX exist. The most common one is the ISODE version that ships with BSD UNIX, the UCD-SNMP version from the University of California at Davis (available at ftp://ucd-snmp.ucdavis.edu/). The UCD-SNMP agent is a heavily modified version of the CMU-SNMP agent. There are a number of SNMP agent variations available for UNIX and each version uses a slightly different configuration. They all, however, come with documentation (some documentation being better then others). The UNIX SNMP implementations also come with a variety of SNMP tools for viewing MIBs and polling SNMP devices.
Therefore, even if your UNIX implementation comes with an SNMP version, either the UCD or CMU, SNMP implementation is worth getting. SNMP on Cisco IOS To configure basic SNMP capability on a Cisco router, the global configuration EXEC commands are as follows: The first step to configuring basic SNMP capability on a Cisco router is configuring the SNMP community name. In addition to the standard read-only and read-write, the IOS also permits you to define a standard acl to filter which SNMP request will be processed.
