SNMP on Cisco IOS<br />

To configure basic SNMP capability on a Cisco router, <strong>the</strong> global configuration EXEC<br />

commands are as follows:<br />

The first step <strong>to</strong> configuring basic SNMP capability on a Cisco router is configuring<br />

<strong>the</strong> SNMP community name. In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> standard read-only and read-write,<br />

<strong>the</strong> IOS also permits you <strong>to</strong> define a standard acl <strong>to</strong> filter which SNMP request will<br />

be processed. Here is an example that uses acl for <strong>the</strong> read-only and read-write<br />

community names "caller" and "listener":<br />

opus(config)#access-list 20 permit 172.16.34.2<br />

opus(config)#access-list 20 permit 172.16.34.45<br />

opus(config)#access-list 30 permit 172.16.34.2<br />

opus(config)#snmp-server community caller ro 20<br />

opus(config)#snmp-server community listener rw 30<br />

Now that <strong>the</strong> community names are set up, let's configure <strong>the</strong> MIB-2 system-group<br />

opus(config)#snmp-server location AA computer room, 5th Floor<br />

The last step is <strong>to</strong> configure <strong>the</strong> Traps. In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> basic SNMP Traps, IOS<br />

supports Traps for Frame Relay, ISDN, config, and environmental moni<strong>to</strong>ring, just<br />
