Understanding Switch Backplane Capacity
The switch backplane is the logical fabric or matrix that acts as the
interconnect for all the switch's Layer 2 interface ports. Its size or
bandwidth capacity determines the throughput, or the amount of
frame exchanges that can occur between the interconnected switch
ports. Because switches can perform simultaneous frame exchanges
(ideally, at the wire rate of the ports) between all the switch's
interface ports, the required rate of throughput varies depending on
the configuration and type of interfaces used.
