Segment port addressing was the PAS methodology originally used with bridges. Therefore, it makes sense that it is the primary PAS method employed by almost all workgroup and enterprise-class switches. Segmented PAS support provides the capability for these switches to associate multiple MAC addresses with a single switch port. Accordingly, although desktop-class switches have limited SAT entry capacity, workgroup and enterprise-class switches can support SAT tables ranging in size between 15,000 to 150,000 entries. The capability to associate multiple MAC entries to a single switch port enables the switch to perform segment-based switching. This provides a great deal of networking flexibility, because you can attach multiple multiport repeaters or MAUs to a single switch. Segment-based switching is the one of the core functions that make switching so attractive for use in collapsed and distributed network backbone topologies. The backbone can function as a traffic multiplexer, enabling shared media segments to simultaneously exchange data. This is not possible with shared backbones because the backbone can only transmit between two stations at any time. Figure 6.11 illustrates the traffic flow dynamics of shared and switched, distributed and collapsed network backbone topologies.

Understanding Switch Backplane Capacity The switch backplane is the logical fabric or matrix that acts as the interconnect for all the switch's Layer 2 interface ports. Its size or bandwidth capacity determines the throughput, or the amount of frame exchanges that can occur between the interconnected switch ports. Because switches can perform simultaneous frame exchanges (ideally, at the wire rate of the ports) between all the switch's interface ports, the required rate of throughput varies depending on the configuration and type of interfaces used.
