Constellation <strong>to</strong>pology is a collection of star <strong>network</strong>s tied <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with separate<br />

interconnection paths. The star/constellation <strong>to</strong>pology is perhaps <strong>the</strong> most popular<br />

<strong>network</strong> <strong>to</strong>pology in use <strong>to</strong>day. This kind of architecture melds easily with <strong>the</strong> kind<br />

of structured wiring system used for telephone and data cabling in large buildings.<br />

Bus Topology<br />

Bus <strong>to</strong>pology was <strong>the</strong> basis for most of <strong>the</strong> original LAN <strong>network</strong>s. Ideally suited for<br />

use with coaxial cable, <strong>the</strong> bus <strong>to</strong>pology is a single length of transmission medium<br />

with nodes connected <strong>to</strong> it (see Figure 1.3). Most installations consist of multiple<br />

cable lengths connected by repeaters.
