SS7 signaling components are connected using a redundant mesh of CCSLs, of<br />

which <strong>the</strong>re are six types (A through F). Figure 5.9 illustrates <strong>the</strong> relation between<br />

<strong>the</strong>se components.<br />

The pro<strong>to</strong>cols that make up <strong>the</strong> SS7 are categorized in<strong>to</strong> abstract reference model<br />

consisting of four functions areas:<br />

1. Application<br />

2. Transaction<br />

3. Network<br />

4. Data Link<br />

Each of <strong>the</strong> various pro<strong>to</strong>cols that provide SS7's functionality falls in<strong>to</strong> one or more<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se functional areas. Figure 5.10 depicts <strong>the</strong> SS7 reference model and <strong>the</strong><br />

placement of various SS7 pro<strong>to</strong>cols within <strong>the</strong> SS7 reference framework.
