Aside from <strong>the</strong>se differences, working with PCMCIA flash cards is <strong>the</strong><br />

same as working with mo<strong>the</strong>rboard-mounted flash, including <strong>the</strong><br />

ability <strong>to</strong> have all of <strong>the</strong> router's flash accessed as a single partition.<br />

When Something Goes Wrong with IOS<br />

If something happens <strong>to</strong> your router's IOS image, <strong>the</strong>re are recovery<br />

options besides sending your router back <strong>to</strong> Cisco. On <strong>the</strong> 2500, 4x00,<br />

and 7x00, <strong>the</strong>re are two IOS versions. On <strong>the</strong> 2500, <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />

stripped-down version in ROM. If <strong>the</strong> conf-reg is set for normal<br />

operation (0x2102 or 0x2002), <strong>the</strong> ROM version is used when <strong>the</strong><br />

flash or o<strong>the</strong>r indicated boot method fails. When in ROM IOS, you can<br />

reload your flash IOS copy or modify your options.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 4x00 and 7x00, <strong>the</strong>re is an IOS in flash and boot-IOS s<strong>to</strong>red in<br />

bootflash. To see what version of <strong>the</strong> IOS you have in bootflash, use<br />

<strong>the</strong> privileged command:<br />

router#sh bootflash<br />

As with <strong>the</strong> 2500 series, if <strong>the</strong>re is a failure in <strong>the</strong> boot process, <strong>the</strong><br />

bootstrap IOS version is used.<br />

With Cisco's later modular routers (1600, 2600, and 3600 series),<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is no ROM IOS or bootflash. Instead, <strong>the</strong>y have added <strong>the</strong> ability
