When Something Goes Wrong with IOS
If something happens to your router's IOS image, there are recovery
options besides sending your router back to Cisco. On the 2500, 4x00,
and 7x00, there are two IOS versions. On the 2500, there is a
stripped-down version in ROM. If the conf-reg is set for normal
operation (0x2102 or 0x2002), the ROM version is used when the
flash or other indicated boot method fails. When in ROM IOS, you can
reload your flash IOS copy or modify your options.
On the 4x00 and 7x00, there is an IOS in flash and boot-IOS stored in
bootflash. To see what version of the IOS you have in bootflash, use
the privileged command:
router#sh bootflash
