Another default setting is DNS resolution. However, for resolution to
work properly, the router needs to know where the DNS server is or
have a local host table. To set the DNS server, use . To enter host addresses, use . To disable DNS resolution so the IOS will not try to
resolve your typing mistakes, use the global configuration EXEC
command .
WidgetCo has one DNS server on the Ridgefield network, but the
Finance terminal users hate to type and fear that if the point-to-point
link goes down, they will be unable to work. So, you need to add the
hosts they connect to:

NOTE
By default, the IOS uses HDLC for the synchronous serial interface
encapsulation. In addition, ATM and x.25 are also available for use on
serial interfaces.
The command
is used to set the router's default routes. For the Concord network, the
default gateway is the Ethernet interface on the Ridgefield router as it
is the next hop. In Ridgefield's case the remote end of its Internet link
is its default gateway. Using this approach, Concord sends all its
Internet-bound traffic to the Ridgefield gateway, where it is forwarded
on to the ISP's router. IP route configuration will be covered in depth
