Authentication is used to permit or deny access to the router. Authorization provides the ability to restrict access to services once the user is on the router. Authorization requires to be activated before any command configuration can take place. This option is oriented more toward use with access-server routers than with traditional network gateways. Authorization, mind you, is not required when using AAA with access servers; it's just there to provide you with more control over users'actions if you need it.
Caution should be taken when using authorization, because mistakes can lead to wasted time messing with rommon. Make sure before you implement authorization services that authentication is fully configured and tested. There are three authorization commands used for restricting access: two for controlling EXEC command access, and one for controlling network events: • Starting an EXEC shell— . • Specific EXEC commands—.
