Rhoda Ezekiel of Quaqtaq asks owners to take good care of their dogs.
The housing shortage for Inuit in Nunavik has long been identified
as central to a range of domestic and community challenges. Makivik
corporate secretary Andy Moorhouse spoke as the chairman of KMHB
during the AGM. “We still need more than $200-million for renovations,”
he said. Many units are badly rundown; some are bug infested.
He explained it is KRG that decides which communities get new social
housing constructed. “There are only seven members on the KMHB
board and we didn’t want them to decide because not all communities
would be represented."
According to the present trend in population growth, it is estimated
that Nunavik will need about 80 new units every year to keep up, not
including the roughly 900 units needed to catch-up with the shortage
today. KMHB now manages over 2,100 social housing units with an office
in each community, having their own separate budgets for operations
and management. Some families are asking for units with more bedrooms.
Many are behind in paying rent. KMHB strongly urges tenants
not to be wasteful in the use of water and electricity and not to damage
their home. These services are very expensive and the costs related
to operations and maintenance is increasing.
