Over and above all the social
issues Nunavik faces, there is a major
lack of housing. With the lack of
housing comes the lack of privacy,
disease spreads faster in crowded
homes, the potential for sexual and
physical abuse is increased, there is
no proper space to do homework
which leads to less student productivity
and can be linked to our
high rate of high school dropouts.
Nunavik is growing at a very fast
pace and is reaching grounds that
have never been attained in the
population’s history. For instance it
was not so long ago that many Inuit
still lived in igloos, and today we live
in the age of the Internet.
Robbie Watt, the Regional
Partnership Committee coordinator,
gave an update of their latest
activities, objectives, and plans for
2010. This committee was given the
directive to work with the health board to find ways to do intervene with
the parents who have been “signaled” by youth services. In addition, a
mass campaign and public discussions over the TNI regional radio on
the importance of youth was given to Ellasu Pauyungie, the talk show

for a brighter healthier future for our children. It is the responsibility of
parents to ensure that their children are safe and well cared for. They are
the future parents and leaders and they deserve no less.
Concluding the retreat, chairperson Minnie Grey said, “Rebuilding
families and investing in our people is our priority and Nunavik has
to find its own solutions to these serious concerns that affect our
children.”
