<strong>Makivik</strong> has set up a new subsidiary company to provide cellular telephone<br />
service in Kuujjuaq. This is a pilot project and future expansion<br />
into other communities will be examined in the future. Installations<br />
were completed before Christmas and the new company, Nunacell,<br />
began on January 18 th .<br />
The new <strong>Makivik</strong> subsidiary<br />
signed a partnership agreement with<br />
Lynx Mobility, which already operates<br />
the same kind of networks in<br />
Kawawachikamach (Schefferville) and<br />
Whapmagoostui (Kuujjuaraapik). The<br />
service in these other communities is<br />
very popular and sales are above their<br />
targeted amounts.<br />
The network will use the Code<br />
Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular<br />
phone standard, which is the<br />
most common cell phone technology<br />
in the northern Canada. The service<br />
will include voice and short message<br />
service (SMS) initially and possibly<br />
include data service such as email in<br />
the future.<br />
To purchase a telephone costs between $70 and $225, depending<br />
upon the model. Service is pay-as-you-go and phone cards are available<br />
