over Kangiqsujuaq. The crowd had come to<br />
make noise on this night and their team gave<br />
them exactly what they wanted.<br />
When one of the team’s young star players,<br />
David Jake Annanack, was asked if he had<br />
played in volleyball tournaments before he<br />
noted that he “had medalled several times”.<br />
Another winning teammate, Charlie<br />
Munick, recalled the events of that sunny summer<br />
evening and the passion in his voice is<br />
elevated as he tells of goose bumps rushing<br />
across his skin. “It really was a great feeling to<br />
win the gold finally, in my home town and in<br />
front of all those fans. It took that pressure off<br />
that had been building inside for so long. You<br />
play and play but you’re never sure if you’ll ever<br />
make it to the top.” Our conversation is ending<br />
and he pauses: “I always told my teammates<br />
that I would retire after winning the gold but<br />
now that I have won I’m not so sure. I’m still<br />
in good shape. I’ll think I’ll be back again to<br />
defend our title.”<br />
When the mayor made his remarks during<br />
the opening ceremonies he stressed his<br />
wishes to his listeners, that everyone involved<br />
make new friends and enjoy themselves. The<br />
games function to help break the sense of<br />
isolation that residents of the Nunavik communities<br />
might feel. Certainly this winter, there<br />
will be stories told of past heroics, and a dream<br />
of warmer months to come, when the games<br />
will begin again.<br />
