National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation
Over the years the National Aboriginal Achievement
Foundation (NAAF) has become the largest non-governmental
funding body for Inuit, First Nations, and Métis
post secondary students across Canada. They provide
financial assistance in the form of bursaries and scholarships
to over 600 Aboriginal students every year.
Since its inception, NAAF has awarded $32-million
to over 8400 students.
These bursaries and scholarships are
made possible with money provided by private
companies as well as the federal and other governments
in Canada. The awarding is governed
by certain conditions, but many are available to
all Aboriginal students. While most of the scholarships
and bursaries are awarded annually, there
are deadlines for making the necessary applications.
These are usually in the spring and/or fall
of each year.
The bursaries and scholarships are organized
into four major categories as follows: 1) Post-Secondary
Education, 2) Fine Arts Bursary Awards Program, 3)
Aboriginal Health Careers, and 4) Oil & Gas Aboriginal
Trades & Technology.
“New Horizons”
The federal government’s “New Horizons” program for
seniors has been around for a number years, and the recent
federal budget indicated that an additional
$10-million will be spent over two years to
support this initiative. The program was
established to fund projects that improve
the quality of life for seniors by enabling
them to share their knowledge, wisdom,
and experiences with others, by improving
facilities for seniors' activities, and by raising
awareness of elder abuse. It provides
non-profit organizations with grants up to
$25,000 for community-based projects. It
also provides contribution funding of up
to $250,000 for regional or national projects
that raise awareness of the abuse of older
adults. They have issued a “call for proposals”
with the deadline for Quebec anticipated to be September
17th, 2010. Call 1-800-277-9914, or visit their web site at:
