Winners of the Kuujjuaq-Tasiujaq race were cheered during the AGM.
“To work on an agreement, it is always best to have a good working relationship
with the other side,” she said.
Reporting on the activities of KSB and the value of education, the
president of KSB, Alacie Nalukturuk said Nunavik
has approximately 3,150 students. The daily attendance
for primary students is 80% and for secondary
students it is down to 60%. She cited their findings
that by rights an estimated 35% of Nunavik’s school
children should have special assistance and a lot of
this need is linked to drug and alcohol abuse. The
school board hires behaviour technicians to help
manage these problems, thanks to Ungaluk funding.
“I remind people, do not drink while you are
pregnant,” Alasie said.
Pita reiterated the need for students to stay in
school, especially with Nunavik government on the
way. Expertise will be needed to run this government.
He also encouraged elected officials to take
the time to meet students and encourage them,
which is something that the Makivik executives do
during their field trips to the communities. Speaking
over Taqramiut Nipingat Radio and to the members
at the meeting, he said, “If you have dropped
out, I encourage to go back. Even adults are given
this chance.”
George Peters, representing the Nunavik Landholding Corporations
Association, talked about their subsidiary Nunavik Mineral Exploration
Fund that trains and hires Inuit for prospecting. He also elaborated on
the financial struggles that landholding corporations have. A thorn in
the side for them is, although the government ignores their request for
funding, government organizations expect to pay a mere token $1.00
per year for the land they build upon, although agreements are signed
obliging them to pay more. “It becomes a headache, and I do not know
their reasons.” He said that landholding has developed guidelines for
construction, including permits, “just as it would be anywhere in the
south.” George also expressed his thanks for the support that the NLCA
gets from Makivik.
