Students on Ice is an award-winning program dedicated to giving youth
from across Canada and around the world powerful educational experiences
in both the Polar Regions. The two-week long expeditions aboard
the Cruise North vessel include shore landings, interpretive hikes, community
visits, Zodiac trips, and ship-based exploration.
The mandate of Students on Ice is to educate, motivate and inspire
the next generation of leaders by connecting them to nature, and, in
doing so, give these youth a greater understanding and respect for
the planet.
Makivik, Cruise North Expeditions and First Air began their partnership
with the Students on Ice organization when six young Inuit from
Nunavik participated in the Arctic 2007 expedition. Since this expedition
Makivik has supported six to seven students every summer to participate
in the Arctic expeditions and three students per year to take part
in the ever so popular Antarctica expeditions during the winter. Cruise
North provides its ship at a discounted rate for their exclusive use and
sees great value in the Students on Ice mission, which is consistent with
Cruise North’s own goal of developing tourism in the region with a sustainable
and respectful approach and teaching the world about the North
in a responsible way. Meanwhile, First Air provides 20 return tickets each
