Meeting in Quebec City
The Makivik board of directors held their spring board meeting during
the week of March 15 th in Quebec City to alert the provincial and federal
governments about Nunavik’s grim shortage of housing and to better
facilitate a press conference on the matter. The press conference took
place on the 17 th beside the large Inukshuk, which is built out of rocks
from Nunavik communities, on the grounds of the Quebec parliament.
Pita Aatami, Noah Tayara and Andy Moorhouse, along with KRG chair,
Maggie Emudluk, responded to questions from a group of reporters and
informed them of Nunavik’s current situation, which has an estimated
deficit of approximately 900 houses throughout the region.
“It is unthinkable that in 2010, up to 20 people are living crammed
into a single home. Yet this is the sad reality facing thousands of Inuit
today in northern Quebec. These overcrowded living conditions are
increasing the risk of violence and sexual abuse. It is our duty to put a
stop to this unacceptable situation,” said Pita Aatami.
Maggie Emudluk offered this
statement to the press as well: “We
can’t afford to wait. The housing
shortage is affecting the physical
and mental well-being of the members
of our communities, including
our children. Quebec’s Commission
des droits de la personne et de la jeunesse
has stated that overcrowded
living conditions are one of the
main causes of the mistreatment of children.”
The Nunavik delegation was also invited to observe a sitting of
the Quebec parliament during their visit to our province’s capital city.
Security is very strict. During this time all visitors must stay completely
silent out of respect for the important business that is taking place down
on the floor. We must refrain from carrying a camera and from leaning
over the balcony too far while trying to see the government members
in session. Even if a child makes noise in there, the child’s guardian is
asked to remove them from the area. One of our board members would
later express her hope that students from Nunavik would also have an
opportunity to visit parliament as well as a way to introduce them to
how governments work.
