These community reports are
one of the main guidelines that
the executives use to ensure
that Makivik actions are taken
to address the most important
concerns for the Nunavik
beneficiaries.
across Nunavik are all concerned and want us to discuss possible solutions,”
she said. Other topics besides alcohol and drug abuse that were
added to the agenda included recognition for Inuit who have been
involved in mining years ago, pollution concerns related to mining, and
the preservation and promotion of Inuit culture and language.
A pleasant group of bureaucrats from Ottawa,
guided by ITK staff, sat in the gymnasium to observe
the AGM for a short while during their tour of
Kangiqsualujjuaq. The goal of these tours, it was
explained, was for them to better know the people
of the North whom they serve through their respective
federal government departments. Wishing them
a safe return to Ottawa, Pita reminded them, “I hope
that you pass on the message that we need a lot
more houses in Nunavik.”
Rather than having community reports presented
further into the AGM, this year it was decided
to hear them near the beginning. In turn each board
member and their accompanying representative
spoke for their community. These community reports
are one of the main guidelines that the executives
use to ensure that Makivik actions are taken to
address the most important concerns for the Nunavik
beneficiaries. Noah Tayara of Salluit had one of the
longest lists of community items but Inuit throughout
the region also share many of his constituent’s
concerns. For instance his community report was
the first to reiterate the serious housing shortage. By
now we are all too familiar with the implications of
overcrowding such as domestic violence, the speedy transfer of sickness
to everyone in the house, the lack of privacy, tension and violence and
inadequate study environments for students. Noah urged the Makivik
executive committee not to give up on this fight to get housing.
Other community concerns related to the dispersal of royalties from
Xstrata Mine, better services for the elders, JBNQA beneficiary enrolment,
