Greenhouse Study in Kuujjuaq
By Ellen Avard
Last fall a preliminary study, based out of Makivik’s Nunavik Research
Centre and backed by the Laval University Geography Department
and the Quebec Horticultural Council, began in Kuujjuaq to determine
whether the residents of Kuujjuaq would like to have a greenhouse.
Such an initiative could potentially be modeled after large greenhouses
in Iqaluit and Inuvik and could be used to grow fresh fruits, vegetables
and perhaps even berries and flowers.
Kuujjuaq would be an ideal location to elaborate such a project
because there is already a small greenhouse in the community that is
used every summer by residents who grow their own vegetables in small
garden plots. As well, between 1950 and 1960 there was
an experimental farm at False River (located about 18 km
from Kuujjuaq) where a greenhouse was used to start
seedlings off before putting them in the ground. The
Roman Catholic Mission, the Anglican Mission as well
as the Hudson’s Bay Company have also all had greenhouses
in the past. Kuujjuaq is also home to quite a few
intrepid gardeners who, over the years, have built and
maintained their own greenhouses. Vegetables grown
in Kuujjuaq have proven to be just as good quality as
those grown in the south.
This study, which is being conducted by master’s
student Ellen Avard, involves meeting with community
leaders, local residents and elders in order to get their
opinions on the potential implementation of a greenhouse project. To
this end, the administration of a series of questionnaires has begun. While
at the time this article was written the study was not yet complete, the
