Faculty Tour 2009
In August of 2009 a faculty study tour took place in
Nunavik. This commitment was made by the Association
for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) in
partnership with the Université de Québec à Montreal
(UQAM). The purpose of the study tour was to initially
offer faculty who teach about Canada and the Canadian
North in US universities the opportunity to gain real
understanding of Nunavik. The tour also gave the faculty
a chance to see what it’s really like in the North, which
would then help incorporate into their course materials
about the increasingly high profile northern public policy
issues. For instance, climate change has brought a lot of
attention to the North.
Diddy Hitchens, former president of ACSUS, was
the head of the group, accompanied by Joël Plouffe of
the Raoul-Dandurand Chair in Strategic and Diplomatic
Studies at UQAM and Kitty Gordon as the Nunavik guide.
Nine university professors ranging from Toronto, Oregon,
Alaska, Georgia, New York State, Maine, Ohio and Virginia
were part of the tour.
The university professors first arrived in Montreal
to obtain background information of the North such as
geography, history and anthropology. Furthermore, Donat
Savoie gave a presentation to the faculty on the present
negotiations of the future Nunavik Regional Government.
Once orientation was completed the group of professors
then travelled to Puvirnituq, the Raglan Xstrata Nickel
Mine, and finally Kuujjuaq. Meetings and discussions
where held with community leaders, elders and youth.
