To develop the region’s resources in a way that is both viable and
sustainable is this sector’s biggest challenge. Like the mining industry,
the renewable resources sector is highly sensitive to market prices but it
is also sensitive to changes in the environment. The fishery is an example
of how changes in the physical environment can impact business
viability. These changes force industry leaders to make difficult decisions
about how to adapt.
Nunavik Biosciences and the Innavik Hydroelectric Project are examples
of the potential that exists in Nunavik for initiatives that are
environmentally sustainable and offer communities the opportunity
to take an ownership role. These projects also provide
employment at the local level; diversify the local economy; and
enhance Nunavik’s national and international profile.
One of the benefits of NBI’s project in Kangirsuk is that the
seaweed that forms the basis of the cosmetic products replaces itself
at a rapid rate so the project has little impact on the local environment.
There is also significant growth potential because of the high volume
of seaweed available. There are many other options for further growth
as well using a variety of other natural resources, such as plants like the
Rhodiola Rosea plant and the by-products from processing shrimp.
The Innavik project is another innovative initiative in the region. This
project is intended to provide affordable, environmentally sustainable
power to Inukjuak using a local river. Pituvik Landholding Corporation
is the majority owner of the project in partnership with a consortium
