In his opening statement to the delegates of Makivik’s annual general meeting that was
held this past April 13 th to 16 th in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Pita Aatami mentioned that it would
be important to discuss social problems in Nunavik such as the widespread abuse of alcohol
and drugs. This topic seemed a more pressing matter than usual, as news had it that a
mysterious death in one of the Nunavik communities just before the meeting began was
evidently linked to drinking.
Substance abuse and problems related to this attracted comment from all sides of the
table. One delegate would comment, “We choose to use drugs and alcohol although children
are becoming homeless—are they being loved less than alcohol? Looking after our
children together is a strong way of living. I am not trying to make anyone sad or worried.
We need to find solutions.”
This article points out some of the other highlights of the meeting for the interest of
our Inuit beneficiaries. As in past years, the AGM was broadcast live over TNI radio for all
Nunavik communities to be immediately and fully informed. Simultaneous translators Ida
Saunders and Sarah Aloupa were also on the job for anyone in Kangiqsualujjuaq’s modern
community gymnasium who required translation.
Vice-president for Economic Development Michael Gordon co-chaired the meeting. One
of the first orders of business after each delegate introduced themselves was the swearing in
by Nunavik governors Eva Deer and Jacob Oweetaluktuk of the newly elected board members
Sheila Ningiuruvik (Quaqtaq), Jonathan Epoo (Saputiit Youth Association), and Andy
Moorhouse (corporate secretary) as well as the re-elected board members Michael Gordon
(V-P for Economic Development), Maggie Akpahatak (Aupaluk), and Raymond Menarick
(Chisasibi). Noah Tayara (Salluit) and Rhoda Kokiapik (Inukjuak), who returned by acclamation,
were also sworn in.
Soon into the meeting, Eva Deer reiterated her concern about bootlegging in the
communities. “I know the police are making an effort. Everyone sitting here and listening
