Inuit Community Reintegration Officers
Community reintegration officers work closely with the correctional
services branch of the Quebec government to foster the
social reintegration of offenders into their communities and families.
As Inuktittut speakers, the reintegration officers open the
language barrier that can exist between offenders and their probation
officers.
There are currently four Inuit community reintegration officers
in Nunavik, based in Kuujjuaq, Inukjuak, Puvirnituq and Salluit. They
follow up on their clients’ community work files and may monitor
their terms of release. They also encourage their clients to access
various public support services, as well as community organizations
and informal care givers. These important additional services are
geared to help offenders resolve conflicts resulting from their crimes
and reintegrate into normal lives in their home communities.
In 1999, KRG and the ministère de la Sécurité publique created
these positions. The Inuit community reintegration officers
are employed by the KRG with professional supervision delivered
by probation officers with the Quebec correctional services
branch. Funding for Inuit community reintegration officers is covered
under the Sivunirmut Agreement (the agreement concerning
block funding for KRG).
l'Institut culturel Avataq.
