These presentations highlighted the productive activities that take<br />
place along side the wage-economy in Nunavik communities. The presenters<br />
stressed the importance of taking these activities into account<br />
when creating economic development plans for the region. In order for<br />
economic development to be sustainable in the long-term, the social<br />
and environmental factors that contribute to the overall health of the<br />
region must be considered. The presentations by KRG on Inuit clothing,<br />
country food and the food processing sector, as well as the presentation<br />
on Avataq show that many Nunavimmiut are still engaged in traditional<br />
§dx8 n4n{î+ sçJ6 r4Zg3hi kN[7u fxXi4.<br />

activities. The Hunter Support Program allows hunters to benefit financially<br />
from participating in land-based activities and it also re-distributes<br />
resources within and among communities, creating a network of support<br />
across Nunavik.<br />
In the food processing sector, a local business such as a processing<br />
plant or smoke house, for example, can work together with hunters<br />
to make products that can be marketed in Nunavik and elsewhere in<br />
the world. This sector creates many direct jobs and supports indirect<br />
jobs as well, such as suppliers, transportation, stores and hotels, etc.<br />
Increasing the production of local foods into products that can be sold<br />
in local stores is another way to enhance the quality and healthfulness of<br />
