First Air Support to Haiti
As the world entered 2010 with the optimism
and excitement that comes with the beginning of
each New Year, the people of Haiti were hit with

people in the island nation suffered as a result of
the magnitude 7.0 earthquake and over 50 of its
aftershocks. The rest of the world came together to
offer a helping hand—First Air was quick to respond
and assist.
One of the requests for First Air’s help was
from the United States Agency for International
Development. Their request to fly our two L-382
Hercules aircraft for missions out of Washington D.C.
to the Haitian capital, Port Au Prince was accepted.
For almost two weeks, the Hercules flew numerous
missions transporting vital supplies such as communication
trucks, tents, surgical/field hospitals and
supplies, water, food, large generators as well as specialized
search and rescue equipment.
Another request came through the company’s
chairman, Pita Aatami who had been contacted by
the Belinda Stronach Foundation. They needed help
sending much-needed food and clothing supplies for
the people of Haiti. First Air contributed its Boeing
767-223 SF for two missions that carried more than
120,000 pounds of supplies to the region.
Furthermore, several First Air employees and
their families were directly affected by this tragedy,
so their co-workers and friends were quick to
launch various fundraising initiatives in support of
the Canadian Red Cross. With the support of Makivik,
First Air has been able to contribute financially, as
well as bringing aid and relief to the people of Haiti
during their time of need.
