the operation and maintenance of marine infrastructures, the great need
for proper auto mechanic services, access trails, as well as the idea of
communities pooling together to lessen the cost of sealift cargo. The
performance of some Nunavik police officers and their language barriers
with unilingual Inuit was in question several times during the AGM.
Being a police officer in one’s home community is a very demanding
job and there are few Inuit interested in such a career. It was decided
that the Makivik executive would request a meeting with KRG leaders
specifically on the topic of policing.
A topic discussed in previous board meetings, some members
mentioned again that they would like to see sewing centres built in every
community, funded in a similar arrangement that Makivik followed when
the corporation built recreational facilities and FM radio stations. During
an overtime board meeting, it was voted that Akulivik and Kangiqsujuaq
would be the first two communities to get new sewing centres, which
are to be built in summer 2010. This new Makivik initiative will ensure
that all communities will eventually have a sewing centre, with two
sewing centres per year being constructed in Nunavik. Another vote
taken during this overtime meeting was to name two new members
of the Ungaluk Advisory Committee: Maggie Akpahatak and Jonathan
Epoo. Both of these decisions were formalized in the passing of the
resolutions at the end of the AGM.
