Johnny Peters says Inuit must be included in any economic develop ment plans.
Closing Remarks
At the end of the second day, Pita and Maggie offered some closing
remarks to the group. Pita spoke about what he found useful from
the presentations and discussion and posed several questions to the
delegates to take back to their communities. The meeting allowed the
participants to hear from one another and to share information about
the successful projects that are ongoing in the region, as well as some
of the challenges that must be considered. This meeting was only a first
step toward identifying some of issues
and priorities that can be addressed and
included in the Plan North and other economic
development plans. Before we can
present our priorities to the Quebec government's
“Plan North”, we need to come
up with “Plan Nunavik”.
Pita suggested that community
leaders consider both the traditional
and market economies and focus on the
resources and strengths that exist in their
communities, and in the region more
broadly. He spoke about the theme of
partnership that came out in the meeting.
He suggested that Makivik, KRG
and local organizations could work with
other Aboriginal organizations. He also
expressed that businesses in Nunavik can
work together in the future, even if they
are competitors. Specifically, Pita referred
to the FCNQ, stating that it is important
that the two organizations (FCNQ and
Makivik) work together to generate economic
development activities in Nunavik.
Ultimately, the purpose of the meeting,
