The delegates also pored over the copies of <strong>Makivik</strong>’s financial<br />
spreadsheets, as treasurer Anthony Ittoshat pointed out that the budget<br />
is the main purpose of a corporate AGM, although various other items<br />
are added onto the agenda. The balance sheet and financial statements<br />
were ratified and approved and all were in favour of having KPMG<br />
Chartered Accountants as the Corporation’s appointed auditors for the<br />
present fiscal year.<br />
Anthony explained that while a high Canadian dollar looks good<br />
for us as individual consumers, <strong>Makivik</strong> trades in the US and when their<br />
dollar is down, so are these investments. “Thanks to the expertise of our<br />
staff we were able to make a little. Other major organizations were closing<br />
and getting federal assistance because they did so poorly.”<br />
Several rounds of applause were called for during the AGM as well.<br />
For instance, delegates clapped for Elisapie Isaac’s success as a solo singer<br />
and her participation in MuchMusic’s “Young Artists for Haiti” performance<br />
that raised over $1-million for earthquake victims in Haiti. Later<br />
wanting to acknowledge a singer in the house, Silas Berthe light-heartedly<br />
asked for a round of applause for Maggie Akpahatak who likes to<br />
sing, albeit on a less commercial level. On the second day of the AGM,<br />
there was a great round of applause for the local elementary kids who<br />
sang a song to everyone in the assembly.<br />
More clapping was done for Willie Keatainak of Salluit who received<br />
the Skookum Jim Award for aboriginal achievement in the mineral industry<br />
award during the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s<br />
International Convention, Trade Show and Investors Exchange in Toronto<br />
on March 8 th . Air Inuit pilot Pierre Laplante was applauded for his 25 years<br />
