Year of the Inuit<br />

The inaugural event of 2010 Year of the Inuit, A Taste of the Arctic: A<br />

Celebration of the Inuit Culture, took place at the National Gallery of<br />

Canada in Ottawa hosted by ITK this past January 24 th . It was a charity<br />

event where more then $20,000 was raised to benefit the Arctic Children<br />

and Youth Foundation. Traditional Inuit foods were served, followed by<br />

decadent berry desserts.<br />

Inuit Children’s Centre, Tarqralik<br />

Partridge, and Susan Aglukark<br />

gave performances, CBC’s Peter<br />

Mansbridge was presented the<br />

first ITK award for his excellence<br />

in Arctic journalism, and First Air<br />

also announced that they were<br />

going to send two Hercules<br />

airplanes to help with the earthquake<br />

relief efforts of Haiti<br />

through the Belinda Stronach<br />

Foundation.<br />

Officially, 2010 Year of the<br />

Inuit is an educational campaign spearheaded by ITK. Its goal is to<br />

increase awareness among the general Canadian population about<br />

issues facing the Inuit of Canada and celebrate Inuit accomplishments<br />

and achievements.<br />

Really a Group Effort<br />

This strong man is Mark Tertiluk of<br />

Kangiqsujuaq (see photo on page 3). As we<br />

see here, Mark had lots of help to lift Aqujaq<br />

Qisiiq's canoe over his head during a springtime<br />

beluga hunt.<br />
