In the case of Cruise North, the ship travels to many different
communities during the season and it would like to develop more formal
relationships with artists and hunters, as well as businesses in the
communities, in order to offer its passengers more cultural activities.
Cruise North’s success is building each year. Its appeal (and therefore
marketability) lies in the cruise as a package deal. It provides accommodations,
a restaurant and guiding all at once. Tourists can also see
many places in one trip. With this in mind, there may be opportunities
for other businesses to benefit from Cruise North’s passengers
by developing pre and post-cruise activities in partnership with airlines
and the cruise line.
Some of the challenges that exist right now in the tourism industry
include limited infrastructure to accommodate large numbers of
tourists, a lack of trained staff, balancing nature-based tourism with
a desire to protect the environment, the high cost of travel to and
within Nunavik, differentiating Nunavik from Nunavut, the inability
to serve country food to tourists, challenges with employing elders,
and the multiplicity of actors involved in tourism in the region, leading
to a lack of direction or a common vision for the industry.
Ultimately, the central message from these presentations on the
tourism industry was for individuals and communities to be innovative
and to build upon the skills and resources around them. Working
together with other tourism projects was sited as a good way to maximize
resources and minimize costs.
Questions and comments about partnerships between organizations
and businesses, and the impact of regulations on the tourism
industry dominated this discussion following these presentations.
There was also some talk about funding opportunities for tourism
projects.
