Winners of Ivakkak’s 10 th anniversary race received public mention during the AGM.
slaughters and discuss it with Makivik to find the best approach for
dealing with the issue. “It will also be very important that Makivik and
Quebec work together to secure the involvement of the federal government
which is directly concerned by this issue,” Corbeil said.
Quebec, Nunavimmiut, First Nations and other northern communities
are jointly drafting the Northern Plan (“Plan Nord”), which was put
forward by Premier Jean Charest to develop the resources of northern
Quebec “for the benefit of its inhabitants”. Corbeil considers the plan “a
great opportunity to take up challenges in the education, health, and
housing fields as well as to promote (Nunavik’s) unique cultural heritage
and develop tourism.” He said he is enthused by the “the cooperative
spirit displayed by all of the people involved in this great project… It is
our hope that the Northern Plan will add a new layer of trust between
us as we work together, towards a common goal.”
KRG chair Maggie Emudluk, took the opportunity to remind
Corbeil of a number of files that she was awaiting Quebec government
response on such as an agreement for providing and storing fire fighting
equipment, more support for the high cost of living, and funding
for access trails.
Besides presenting her report on the Nunavik government negotiations,
Minnie Grey was also at the AGM to speak for the Regional
Partnership Committee about youth protection. She too was grateful
for Ungaluk funding that they have secured to deal with the many
“unpleasant things to hear about.” She synthesized their report that
there is a movement to address human rights issues for the youth. Many
organizations are involved but it was said that proper childcare starts
in the home. There are approximately 500 Nunavik children placed in
foster homes now. Minnie said that they also have pamphlets, posters
and a video in production “to remind people that children deserve a
healthy lifestyle.”
