Training
The three seamstresses at our workshop in Makivik’s Montreal office
and their workshop manager received some training at Ricky and Ingo’s,
a furrier on Chabanel Street, Montreal in March 2010. We learned how
to block skins to enlarge them, to work with patterns for fur and to sew
sealskin garments with industrial sewing machines for fur and leather.
This training provided us with an opportunity to sew sealskin vests from
one of Vickie Okpik’s designs in order to hand them out to the winners
of the 2010 Ivakkak dog-team race. The training session provided us
with an exciting way to pursue our professional development and to
use Ivakkak to showcase our expertise.
Achievements and Promotions
The year 2009 saw a lot of development for Nunavik Creations.
It culminated with the hiring of Janet Enooagak, our fifth full-time
employee.
Janet is our third seamstress in Makivik’s Montreal office. She is
blessed with a lot of sewing dexterity and has easily integrated herself
with the rest of the team. She accompanied her colleagues, Vera Greening
and Daisy Savard, to Inukjuak last November in order to share information
on new parka standards and work with Mary Eepoo on new styles
and techniques. This event served to tighten the bonds between our
seamstresses in the North and in the South. Similar visits will be held in
other communities during the year.
Among last year’s major projects was the production of 657 pairs
of mittens for Air Inuit and 150 parkas for the Arctic Winter Games. The
mittens were hand sewn by more than 45 seamstresses in Nunavik communities
and Montreal.
Nunavik Creations has also been working to provide new models
for parkas and accessories for its boutique in Kuujjuaq as well as for
the Northern Lights Trade Show, held in Montreal from January 27 th to
30 th , 2010.
Betsy Puttayuk and Vickie Okpik also attended “Nunavik Day”
(November 23 rd , 2009) at the Montreal General Hospital representing
