Community Experience in Mining
IBA: Experience from Other Northern
Regions
This group of presentations offered information on Nunavik’s
geological profile and potential mining opportunities; how the mining
development process has developed in the past and the impact this has
had on communities; and finally some of the tools available to Inuit today
that regulate the mining development process in Nunavik.
There were four overarching themes repeated throughout each of
the five presentations:
1. Inuit involvement in, and control over, mining development is
essential;
2. In order to achieve this objective internal capacity (among individuals
as well as local and regional institutions) must be built
up;
3. Nunavik needs a more integrated and long-term vision for mineral
development; and
4. Maintaining a balance between mining development and environmental
protection is necessary for sustainability in the
long-term.
It is clear from the first two presentations that there is considerable
mining potential in the region. The mineral showings in Nunavik are
diverse and vary by sub-region. New potential mining sites are being
discovered all the time. For example, Ungava Bay has been identified
as an emerging uranium district; and there is evidence that Rare Earth
Elements—an emerging commodity used in energy and transportation
technologies—are also present in the region.
