the Saturviit Women’s Association, the Detainees Visits Program, the
Qajaq Men’s Network, the Saputiit Youth Association, the Nunavik
Landholding Corporations Association, the Avataq Cultural Institute, the
Regional Partnership
Committee, and the
Kativik Regional Police
Force, and the Nunavik
Regional Government
Negotiations. The
elders at this retreat
were Lizzie Niviaxie
and Lucassie Echalook
from the Hudson coast,
Ellasuk Pauyungie from
the Hudson straight,
and Johnny Gordon and
Christina Baron from the
Ungava coast.
The safety and well being of Nunavik’s children and youth was the
main topic of the gathering. Many of the delegates suggested that Inuit
traditional ways should be practiced in this regard.
Traditionally Inuit thrived using their own ways to
deal with their challenges. There were healers to
mend pains, psychologists to talk to about personal
problems, educators to teach how to hunt
and gather, and so on. Why not introduce traditional
knowledge to today’s society? This is why
the elders’ input and involvement is a very important
element of these gatherings.
Sadly there are a great number of children
in foster homes in Nunavik and this is unacceptable
for such a small population. What is causing
such a high number of children to be taken out of
their homes? Is it alcoholism? Neglect? Poverty?
This is why the leaders and elders come together,
to find solutions and ways to deal with the social
issues of Nunavik.
After welcoming words and the introduction
of delegates, the police force gave a presentation
on crime statistics and how they have improved
the security of Nunavimmiut. “Kativik Cadets” is
a new program brought in by the KRPF for the
youth of Nunavik. This program is a good way to
get teens involved, by training them through discipline
and respect. In recruiting youth, this means
more potential police officers, and more police
officers means more safety.
A report on school board’s parenting program,
which was created in 1999, was included on
the agenda. They have delivered workshops in all
Nunavik communities with the focus on “prevention
rather then intervention” and the promotion
of family wellness and healthy community relationships. It is estimated
that 70 percent of Nunavik’s population is under the age of 35.
With the lack of housing comes
the lack of privacy, disease
spreads faster in crowded homes,
the potential for sexual and
physical abuse is increased,
there is no proper space to do
homework which leads to less
student productivity and can be
linked to our high rate of high
school dropouts.
