While in a cave on Mount Horeb, the mount where God used to dwell<br />

during the exodus from Egypt, he stood at the arrival of Yahweh (1 Kings<br />

19:9-12), who ordered him to stay on the mountain during his passage.<br />

The arrival (landing?) is accompanied by all the usual phenomena, we<br />

already know well: strong wind, earth shaking, fire, and then a gentle<br />

breeze.<br />

The Rapture of Elijah<br />

The episode that concerns us, however, is in Chapter 2 of the Second Book of<br />

Kings and is known as “the rapture of Elijah.”<br />

This is an event that modern terminology might define as a true abduction; a<br />

kidnapping at the hands of aliens.<br />

The term “rapture” may not be appropriate here, because what happened was<br />

consciously known in advance by the prophet Elijah. He was also<br />

accompanied by his followers who were also made aware of what was about<br />

to happen. We see the episode in detail (2 Kings 2:1 et seq.).<br />

The chapter begins with the departure of Elijah and his disciple Elisha from<br />

the city of Gilgal, which is:<br />
