4. Common Inf<strong>in</strong>itive Constructions<br />
As is true for all dependent constructions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itive clauses described<br />
above, it is helpful to remember that <strong>German</strong> abides by two rules that give you<br />
visual cues about the structure of sentences:<br />
1. All dependent constructions, whether clauses or phrases, are separated from<br />
ma<strong>in</strong> clauses by a comma or commas.<br />
2. Verbs stand <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al position <strong>in</strong> dependent clauses and phrases.<br />
There are three prepositions that <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itive clauses take on special but commonly<br />
used mean<strong>in</strong>gs:<br />
a. um . . . zu + <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itive = “<strong>in</strong> order to”<br />
Sie lernt fleißig, um das Examen zu bestehen.<br />
She studies hard <strong>in</strong> order to pass the exam.<br />
b. ohne . . . zu + <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itive = “without” + present participle.<br />
Wir s<strong>in</strong>d nach Frankreich gereist, ohne Paris zu besuchen.<br />
We travelled to France without visit<strong>in</strong>g Paris.<br />
c. anstatt (sometimes statt) . . . zu + <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itive = “<strong>in</strong>stead of” + present<br />
participle.<br />
Anstatt zu arbeiten, s<strong>in</strong>d wir <strong>in</strong>s K<strong>in</strong>o gegangen.<br />
Instead of work<strong>in</strong>g we went to the c<strong>in</strong>ema (movies).<br />
