2. Verbs that Function Like Modals<br />
a. sehen = “to see” and hören = “to hear”<br />
With sehen and hören, a dependent <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itive is used and thus a double<br />
<strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itive is formed <strong>in</strong> the perfect tenses.<br />
Present:<br />
Er sieht den Zug ankommen.<br />
He sees the tra<strong>in</strong> arrive.<br />
Sie hört ihren Bruder s<strong>in</strong>gen.<br />
She hears her brother s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
[or:] She hears her brother s<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Present perfect:<br />
Er hat den Zug ankommen sehen.<br />
He saw the tra<strong>in</strong> arrive.<br />
Sie hat ihren Bruder s<strong>in</strong>gen hören.<br />
She heard her brother s<strong>in</strong>g(<strong>in</strong>g).<br />
Simple past:<br />
Er sah den Zug ankommen.<br />
He saw the tra<strong>in</strong> arrive.<br />
Sie hörte ihren Bruder s<strong>in</strong>gen.<br />
She heard her brother s<strong>in</strong>g(<strong>in</strong>g).<br />
b. lassen<br />
This verb has several uses:<br />
i. lassen – to leave. In this case it functions like any other verb:<br />
Er läßt mich alle<strong>in</strong>.<br />
He leaves me alone.
