These complex noun phrases are a good opportunity to see the value <strong>in</strong> first<br />

mark<strong>in</strong>g off where each noun phrase beg<strong>in</strong>s and ends before attempt<strong>in</strong>g to translate<br />

a long sentence. It simplifies your task to know that everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>side a noun<br />

phrase can only be modify<strong>in</strong>g the noun, not anyth<strong>in</strong>g outside of the noun phrase.<br />

Remember that you can easily see which are adverbs and which are adjectives by<br />

simply not<strong>in</strong>g which have adjective end<strong>in</strong>gs and which do not.<br />

7. Participial Phrases<br />

Both present and past participles are used <strong>in</strong> participial phrases.<br />

Example us<strong>in</strong>g a present participle:<br />

Im Garten spielend, sang das K<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the garden, the child sang.<br />

Example us<strong>in</strong>g a past participle:<br />

Immer an die Musik <strong>in</strong>teressiert, g<strong>in</strong>g der Student oft <strong>in</strong> die Oper.<br />

Always <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> music, the student went to the opera often.<br />

Note that the participle is function<strong>in</strong>g (and is located <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al position) as if it were<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> verb <strong>in</strong> a subord<strong>in</strong>ate clause. Here’s how you could diagram the syntax of<br />

the above participial phrases:<br />

Verb: spielend<br />

Predicate (a prepositional phrase): im Garten
