16. Skeptics would voice the concern that alum<strong>in</strong>um would be much more<br />
expensive than steel; <strong>in</strong> addition it would pose ecological problems because of<br />
the large amounts of energy which would be consumed <strong>in</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g the raw<br />
material bauxite <strong>in</strong>to utilizable alum<strong>in</strong>um.<br />
17. There would rema<strong>in</strong> only one reaction for the Federal Bank, obligated by law<br />
especially to secure the stability of prices and currency: raise the <strong>in</strong>terest rates<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>, one more turn on the spiral of recession <strong>in</strong> <strong>German</strong>y and worldwide.<br />

proclaims that a good book should be “poly<strong>in</strong>terpretable,” and rem<strong>in</strong>ds us of an<br />
image of Umberto Eco’s: the more possible <strong>in</strong>terpretations, the better runs the<br />
mach<strong>in</strong>e that is the book.<br />
20. F<strong>in</strong>ally, fantasy is the power which has as its effect “that we can endure that<br />
life on Earth which we have between both of our <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite absences.”<br />
