Correctly translate a number of “false friends.”<br />

Identify and translate a number of common idioms.<br />

Translate four common particles.<br />

Identify and translate commands <strong>in</strong> imperative mood.<br />

Identify and translate reflexive constructions that are function<strong>in</strong>g as a passivevoice<br />

equivalent.<br />

2. False Friends<br />

By this po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> your experiences with <strong>German</strong> you will have noticed that, despite<br />

the existence of thousands of words which both look like and share the same<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g as English words, there are a few which look like English words but whose<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>gs are completely different. Visual similarities of other k<strong>in</strong>ds can also be<br />

mislead<strong>in</strong>g. Here are the most common of these so-called “false friends” – words<br />

that are often confused:<br />

aktuell (current, up-todate)<br />

also (thus, therefore)<br />

bald (soon, shortly)<br />

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH<br />

eigentlich (actual, actually)<br />

auch (also)<br />

kahl (bald)
