The forge is listed because of it's proximity to the Old Buck. It forms an attractive streetscape
with the Old Buck adjacent. The building is Grade 2 listed because it is within the Old Buck's
curtilage, but is not mentioned specifically.
It is an outbuilding of no particular architectural merit but within the curtilage of the Grade II
listed building. There is no record of the original build date, but it contains bricks of similar
age to the Old Buck next door (Cl7th). It was used as blacksmith's in the early part of 20th
century.
There were some repairs sometime around 1970 in modern brick inside and chalk outside.
Some crude pointing and renewed timber roof support beams to form loft space. The
previous owner built dog kennels inside in breeze blocks but it is now very damp, especially
the west wall.
There are no particular features that merit the listing of the building, although its haphazard
mixture of materials has a certain charm. The proposed alterations in no way damage the
listed qualities of the building and will ensure a use for this building into the foreseeable
future.
