Annex 1 Habitats that are a primary reason for selection of the SAC are: estuaries; and, mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater at low tide, both of which are adjacent to the proposed development. Annex 1 Habitats present as a qualifying feature, but not a primary reason for selection of the SAC include: sandbanks which are slightly covered by seawater all the time; coastal lagoons; Salicornia and other annuals colonising mud and sand; Atlantic sea meadows (Glauco-Puccinallietalia maritimae); embryonic shifting dunes; shifting dunes along the shoreline with Ammophila arenaria (‘white dunes’); fixed dunes with herbaceous vegetation (‘grey dunes’); and dunes with Hippophae rhamnoides. Annex II species that are present as a qualifying feature, but not a primary reason for site selection, includes sea lamprey, river lamprey and grey seal. The boundaries of the SAC, SPA and Ramsar site are co-incident. The Humber Estuary EMS encompasses the marine areas of the SAC, SPA and Ramsar site (i.e. land covered continuously or intermittently by tidal waters) and incorporates all aspects of the qualifying features for the SAC, SPA and Ramsar site. The SSSI is designated for its habitats including mudflats, sandflats and salt marsh, as well as saline lagoons, dunes and standing water there are also nationally important numbers of 22 wintering wildfowl and nine passage waders, and a nationally important assemblage of breeding birds of lowland open waters and their margins. It is also nationally important for a breeding colony of grey seals Halichoerus grypus, river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis and sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus, a vascular plant assemblage and an invertebrate assemblage. Saline Lagoons with an exceptionally rich fauna specifically over wintering birds. Amongst these are nationally important numbers of black-tailed godwits, which have visited the site in increasing numbers since the late 1980’s.
