Chapter 6 - Empirical Assistance for the <strong>Design</strong>er<br />

The most important global view expressed here for you to consider is that the actual<br />

engine, like the engine model, uses the "separate" technologies <strong>of</strong> Chapters 1 to 4 to behave<br />

like the paper engines <strong>of</strong> Chapter 5. The best engine designer is one who can think in terms <strong>of</strong><br />

a paper engine turning in his mind, each turn bringing images <strong>of</strong> the effect <strong>of</strong> changing the<br />

unsteady gas flow regime, the scavenging regime, <strong>and</strong> the combustion regime together with<br />

the mutual interaction <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> those effects. This implies a thorough underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong><br />

those topics, <strong>and</strong> the more thorough that underst<strong>and</strong>ing, the more complex can be the interaction<br />

which the mind will h<strong>and</strong>le. Should one <strong>of</strong> those topics be missing or poorly understood,<br />

then the quality <strong>of</strong> the mental debate will suffer. It is hoped that the visual imagery provided<br />

by the computer programs referenced will accelerate the underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> these topics.<br />

As pointed out frequently thus far, our comprehension <strong>of</strong> many phenomena is in its infancy<br />

<strong>and</strong> it is only thirty-five years on from the general availability <strong>of</strong> computers <strong>and</strong> also the<br />

black art <strong>of</strong> much <strong>of</strong> the 1950s' technology. It behooves the thinking designer to follow <strong>and</strong> to<br />

study the progress <strong>of</strong> technology through the technical papers which are published in this <strong>and</strong><br />

related fields <strong>of</strong> endeavor.<br />

The remainder <strong>of</strong> this book will concentrate on selected specialized topics, <strong>and</strong> particularly<br />

on the future <strong>of</strong> the design <strong>and</strong> development <strong>of</strong> two-stroke engines.<br />
