Conservationists have long been seriously concerned thatdevelopment of the port would have adverse impacts on the turtles nesting in the area.The IUCN’s work with the Dhamra Port Company Limited (DPCL) intended to influence DPCL’scorporate policy to adopt world standard environment and biodiversity conservation managementpractices during the construction and operation phases of the port.To initially address this issue, dredging was identified as a threat to marine turtles. IUCN with expertsfrom the Species Survival Commission’s Marine Turtle Specialist Group developed a dredging protocolfor the port. To address longer-term management of the port, IUCN experts supported DPCL indeveloping a world class environmental management plan.The success of the dredging activities, the port lighting plan, and uptake of the environmentalmanagement plan by DPCL are tangible examples of success in influencing corporate policy. IUCN isnow in discussion with the Government of Orissa, which has agreed to include the IUCN’s lightingguidelines as a mandatory requirement for getting the approval for industrial development projectsalong the coastline of Orissa.360
