Itwas still more difficuk wherc obviously several words luive becn omittedand where whole sentences are wanting, akhough some such corruptpassages could be emended by comparing them with anakjgous passagesin other books of Wychfs; yet others again coukl be emended accordingto the sense, but even then tliere remained a considerable number ofpassages in which every attempt at emendation or interpretation accordingto the sense proved quite hopeless.^ Smak aj^parent mistakes weresimply corrected, but in difficuk passages the corrections were notahvays incorporated with the text; incorporation took phice only wlienthe correction was considered quite certain. I have thought it necessaryhere to refer to these things, so that the reader of the l}ook may notaccuse the editor of having passed them by heedlessly. ^ When it hasbeen possible to restore at least a number of the corrupt passages, Iowe it to the proved zeal and faithful cooperation of F. Even inpassages from the Rihle, which it would have been easy to coHate, there are flagrantmistakes and oniissions, e. g. p. 3b are wanting the words: qui in manifesto ludeusest ne.1 This is done by the words: Hic locus corruptus est or Hic locus corruptusesse videtur .... oder Hic aliquot verba exciderunt.2 Stress must be laid on some of Wyclifs Latin sermons that in partcontain the same thoughts, which serves to fix their date.
