Heinrihs Strods. Trimdas izdevumu cenzūra Latvijas PSR
was submitted to the LSSR KGB for information, while a small portion was transferred
for storage in special library funds. The major part of exile and foreign literature was
handed over for destruction. In 1968, the Main Literature Board of Latvia, popularly
called also the Book KGB, released 347 packages to their addressees (45%), while
10 packages (1%) were handed over after a part of their content had been destroyed
and 416 packages (54%) were wholly destroyed. Altogether from the printed matter
received in 1980–1988, 9–19% were transferred to the special fund of the LSSR Fundamental
Library, 3.5–16.9% were handed over to the LCP CC (for counter-propaganda)
and 3.1–22.4% were submitted to the LSSR CM and KGB (for information), while
33.6–95.4% were destroyed. As a result, during the USSR totalitarian Communist occupation
in the period from 1958 to 1990, altogether around 60,000 exile publications
were destroyed, thus oppressing the Latvian culture. The destruction of Latvian exile
publications and their locking in special funds in the occupied Latvia was a crime against
humanity.
