The theme of the conference. which is part of the Design Turkey
Industrial Design Awards. changes in each edition and it was
defined as Creating Value for Life by Design for 2012, the 3rd
edition of the awards programme. During the conference,
organized within the framework of the conference theme, the
role of design in creating value for business and the quality of
life in general were emphasized. The conference discussed
the value that design creates for the user, society, environment
and business at different levels through s pecific cases. The
speakers at the conference, which was planned to consist of
two main parts. were purposefully selected from countries
which are little known in Turkey despite their advanced levels
of design policy implementations.
The first part of the conference. held on the 30th of November
2012 in the Haliç Congress Centre. focused on the experiences
of East Asian countries in using design strategically to upgrade
their economies. In addition to East Asian countries, emphasis
was placed on the significance attached to design by new
actors such as South Africa. The conference started with the
opening speech of Professor Dr. Özlem Er who developed
the conference programme within the framework set by the
theme and undertook the role of moderator. Following the
opening remarks of the head of the Turkish Exporters Assembly
(TİM), Mr. Mehmet Büyükekşi, the Deputy Undersecretary of
the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Economy Design Turkey
Industrial Design Awards Executive Committee Chair, Mr.
İbrahim Şenel gave a comprehensive presentation entitled “The
Evaluation of the Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards in
the context of Design and Innovation Support Programmes in
Turkey”.
Following the opening talks, the main aim of the conference
was to explore the strategic use of design by East Asian
countries which have gone through a similar path of
development to the one that Turkey has pursued. The
presentations in this part started with the presentation of the
chairman of the Malaysian Design Council, Professor Dr. Ahmad
H. Zauniddin, entitled “Malaysian Experience in Design Support
and Promotion” and this was followed by the presentation of
Professor Dr. Mugendi K. M’Rithaa, a member of the ICSID
Executive Board, who was part of the team which brought the
title of World Design Capital 2014 to Capetown, South Africa.
Professor M’Rithaa explained how Capetown prepared for the
World Design Capital title through his presentation entitled
“Design for Transformation: Cape Town’s World Design Capital
2014 Aspirations in Context”. After a break, the first part of
the conference continued with the presentation given by Mr.
Gordon Bruce, a design consultant with 40 years of experience,
who started his career in the design office of Elliot Noyes, the
legendary design manager of IBM and later advised Samsung
of South Korea witnessing the historical transformation of
the company. His presentation entitled “Beneficial Corporate
Transitions through Meaningful Design Programs: IBM,
Samsung and Culture’s Effect on Design, such as in China” was
followed by the presentation of the experienced design educator
Professor Wen-chi Chang, “The Role of Design in Taiwan: How
do the Design Schools Contribute to the Design Support Policy
of the Government”.
In the second part of the conference, the speakers focused
on how designers and companies create value by design
for various stakeholders. The second part started with a
presentation by Birgit H. Jevnaker, an expert academician
on design management entitled “Creating Value for Life:
Norwegian Experiences in Designing Innovation”. The next
speaker was Özgür Taşar, a Turkish industrial designer who has
been pursuing a successful career at an international level. As
a senior industrial designer in Philips, he gave a presentation
entitled “Innovation by Design”. The second part continued
with another Turkish industrial designer, who is located in
France and also has a successful international career, giving
a presentation entitled “International Experience in Design
Practice”. This part ended with a presentation by a designer
and a design consultant with a long and successful career
in the automotive industry which is also a sector of critical
importance in the development of Turkish industry. The title of
this presentation was “Design in the Automotive Industry: Its
Peculiarities and the Dangers of Preconceptions”.
The speeches of the representatives from East Asian
countries, which have undergone a similar type of industrial
development to Turkey, and also the designers, who work in
global companies or operate internationally, clearly revealed
that design is one of the most important tools of development
enabling the production of high value-added products and
thereby increasing the quality of life in general. It was also
confirmed that both the Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards
organization and the conferences organized in the context of
the award programme have the potential to serve as important
platforms of learning and inspiration and give direction to the
development of design in Turkey.
