Jünger schreibt von einer „wachsendenVersteinerung des Lebens“ - der Medusa-Blick dermedialen Optik. Hier kommt die Maske ins Spiel - ihr toter,leerer Blick, anders als die Totenmaske, deren Augenliedergeschlossen sind. Aus dergleichen romantischen Imaginationstammt Wordsworths Essay upon Epitaphs, auf das Paul de MansText „Autobiography as De-facement“ sich bezieht:At several points throughout the three essays, Wordsworth cautins consistently against the use of prosopopoeia,against the conventin of having the „Sta Viator“ adressed to the traveler on the road of life by the voice of thedeparted person. Such chiasmic figures, crossing the condi/tions of death and of life with the attributes of speechand of silence are, says Wordsworth, „too poignant und too transitory“ ­ a curiously phrased criticism, sinceit is the poignancy of the weeping „silent marble“, as in Gray´s epitaph on Mrs. Clark, for which the essaysstrive. 196Wordsworth zitiert hier lückenhaft Miltons Sonnet OnShakespeare. Darin (von Wordsworth nicht, aber von Paul de Manzitiert) auch die Zeile: „thou Dost make us marble“. Washeißt es, wenn als Modell für Sprache und Schrift das Grabmalgenommen wird? 197„Doth make us marble“, in the Essays upon Epitaphs, cannot fail to evoke the latent threat that inhabitsprosopopoeia, namemly that by making the dead speak, the symmetrical structure of the trope implies, by thesame token, that the living are struck dumb ... The surmise of the „Pause, Traveller!“ [conventional toepitaphs] thus acquires a sinister connotation that is not only the prefiguration of one´s own mortality but ouractual entry into the frozen world of the dead.
