<strong>with</strong> Sal<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>in</strong> <strong>Wheatbelt</strong> <strong>Valleys</strong> Conference<br />
<strong>Deal<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
Prospects and Practical Options<br />
Processes,<br />
Respondents were given the opportunity to provide qualitative <strong>in</strong>formation on what should be done <strong>with</strong> land<br />
severely impacted by <strong>sal<strong>in</strong>ity</strong>. Responses varied from do noth<strong>in</strong>g to full reclamation. Emphasis was placed<br />
on f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g economic uses for the land <strong>in</strong> the areas <strong>of</strong> salt and m<strong>in</strong>eral m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, aquaculture, saltland pastures<br />
and energy production. Other options concentrated on creat<strong>in</strong>g a new sal<strong>in</strong>e ecosystem, through fenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and revegetation <strong>with</strong> native salt tolerant vegetation. Some people considered dra<strong>in</strong>age, pump<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
evaporation pumps as other alternatives.<br />
EXPENDITURE<br />
In light <strong>of</strong> the theme <strong>of</strong> the conference, we would expect the scenario where respondents were asked to<br />
allocate 10 million dollars <strong>of</strong> additional government funds to be strongly biased towards the environment.<br />
However, respondents obviously still had the bigger picture <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>with</strong> funds be<strong>in</strong>g spent <strong>in</strong> both surveys<br />
on health, education, law and order and other areas.<br />
Total <strong>in</strong>vestment by attendees <strong>in</strong> the first survey was as follows; health 12%, education 20%, law and order<br />
6%, environment 59% and other areas 3%. The distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> the second survey was very<br />
similar and <strong>in</strong>cluded; health 11%, education 22%, law and order 6%, environment 53% and other areas 8%.<br />
Government <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> viable options for <strong>sal<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> was generally viewed as be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sufficient <strong>in</strong> the areas<br />
<strong>of</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g exist<strong>in</strong>g plant based options, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g new commercial options, develop<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g options<br />
and communicat<strong>in</strong>g new <strong>in</strong>formation. Respondents were more optimistic about government <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong><br />
new commercial and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g options at the end <strong>of</strong> the conference (see figure below). The level <strong>of</strong> public<br />
support was also viewed by most as be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sufficient.<br />
Question 4.3 In which <strong>of</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g areas is the current level <strong>of</strong> government<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment sufficient to f<strong>in</strong>d effective and affordable options to tackle <strong>sal<strong>in</strong>ity</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
